UAVs in the Polish High Tatra Mountains - demonstration

In September, at the invitation of the Carpathian Border Guard Unit in Zakopane, the CIK team organised test activities demonstrating the ability of UAVs to operate in the Polish High Tatra Mountains. The activity was hosted by the Tatra Mountains National Park.

After initial consultations with TOPR, an experiment plan was developed to investigate the general operational limitations of off-the-shelf UAVs and to explore the detailed possibilities of carrying out remote inspections of hard-to-reach elements of the infrastructure under the care of the Border Guard. Ability to conduct safe flights in adverse conditions was assessed. In addition, a suggested method for developing automatic inspection routes was developed jointly with the Tatra Volunteer Search and Rescue (TOPR).

The demonstration was also an opportunity to conduct a photogrammetric experiment, in which an effective method was developed for capturing data (images useful for further processing to 2D and 3D) in terrain with significant height differences.
