Flooded areas after the destruction of the dam on the Kakhovsky Reservoir in satellite images
A series of images taken by the Sentinel-3 satellite on 5, 6, and 7 June 2023, around 8:00 UTC, shows the scale of flooding of the area from the dam to the mouth of the Dnieper into the Dnieper Bay on the Black Sea coast, as well as the retreat of water on the Ingulec River, which flows into the Dnieper east of Kherson.
First images from the Sentinel-2 satellite, acquired on 8 June in the morning (8:57 UTC), show the extent of the flooding on the Ingulec River and in the mouth of the Dnieper below Kherson (see maps beneath).
Sentinel-2 and Sentinel-3 are satellites of the European Earth Observation program Copernicus. Sentinel-3 is carrying the OLCI spectrometer on board, which provides data with a spatial resolution of 300 m that enables monitoring of large areas of land every 1-2 days. Sentinel-2 acquires images with much greater spatial resolution - 10 m, every few days.
Images from Sentinel-3 and some from Sentinel-2 are in a color composition using the near infrared band. Therefore, the vegetation is visible in red colors. On all images water has a dark blue or black tint and the clouds are white.
