Fire in the Biebrza National Park observed from orbit (new maps added 30 April, 17:00)

Specialists from the Crisis Information Centre CBK PAN are monitoring the development of the fire in the Biebrza National Park. The latest analysis includes data acquired by the American satellites Landsat 7 and Landsat 8 as well as European Sentinel-3. Observations from the last three days show that on 20th April the fire area covered 528 hectares and was growing very quickly. Within the next 24 hours, it tripled (1,486 ha), and on 22nd April it covered an area of 4,175 ha. 

High-resolution Landsat images showed the location and extent of the fire front. In the images from 21st April, it has the form of several sections, the two largest of which stretch for about 1-2 km. The time sequence of the images revealed that the line of fire was moving in a southwesterly direction.

The monitoring of the fire situation also took into account data from meteorological satellites. Their resolution does not allow to see the fire itself, but it perfectly illustrated the extent of the smoke cloud caused by the fire. Images from the Aqua satellite acquired on 20th and 22nd April showed that in those days the cloud of smoke was about 120 km long and reached as far as the border of the Mazowieckie Voivodeship.

Fire monitoring in the Biebrza National Park is carried out on behalf of the National Headquarters of the State Fire Service, under a permanent agreement between the Chief Commander of the State Fire Service and CBK PAN.
