CIK Activation: local flooding in the Vistula Fens

As a result of heavy rainfall in northern Poland at the end of July 2025, the Crisis Information Centre of the CBK PAN was asked to activate as part of the Poland Civil Security Hub. The area of particular interest became the Vistula Fens, where in several places dikes broke or leaked and flooded surrounding meadows or farmland.

Satellite radar flood monitoring products developed by ICEYE were delivered to interested users from the Institute of Meteorology and Water Management – National Research Institute and the Polish Waters. In addition, CIK carried out an analysis of publicly available Sentinel satellite imagery to obtain information on the extent of local flooding.  

One of the places that were flooded were the areas along the Dzierzgoń River near the village of Święty Gaj on the border of the Warmian-Masurian and Pomeranian provinces. The attached map shows the extent of the flooding, which comes from the ICEYE Flood Insights product. It uses not only processed satellite radar images, but also a detailed digital elevation model to better determine the extent of the water in areas covered by e.g. dense vegetation.
